The more stuff you have in your house, the more likely it is to look smaller. In fact, you should have all of your closets cleaned out and only ½- ¾ of the way full. This is because if the closet is bulging it will look as though there is not enough room in the house to store everything that you have. Additionally, the more things you have in the house, the less it will allow them to envision their belongings in the home because it is crowded with your stuff. This is why you should start boxing up things now. Get all of the closets cleared out, only keep what you are using now, and the rest get boxed and put in a storage unit, the garage or basement.
2. Get Rid Of The Personal Touch
Another thing you should do is go through the house and get rid of all of the things that make it look like your house. If you have pictures of your kids and family, take those down and replace them with pictures of landscapes. Extra religious pictures should also be taken down so that it doesn't exclude anyone who might be looking at the house.
The goal is to get the people who look at the house to envision themselves living there. If it has too much of you in the house, this will be challenging.
3. Put In Better Lighting
Lastly, you should have great lighting when you show the house. Try to show it during the day when you can open all the windows and turn on all the lights. This will make the house feel bigger and more alive. If you don't have great lighting in the house, consider buying lamps and extra lights to put in while you show the house.
