3 Situations When Buying A Single-Family Home Is Better Than Buying A Townhouse

If you are trying to decide whether to buy a townhouse or a single-family home, you should thoroughly analyze the differences between these two options. There are times when people would benefit more from buying a townhouse, but there are also times when buying a single-family home is the better option. Here are three situations in which buying a single-family home is the better choice of the two options.

When you want more freedom and privacy

One difference between single-family homes and multi-family homes is privacy. As you think about these two choices of homes, think about how much privacy you long for. If you hope to have a lot of privacy, you probably would not want to buy a townhouse. Townhouses are grouped together, and this leaves you with many close neighbors. If you look at single-family homes, you will notice that there is typically a lot more privacy.

Freedom is another difference. Townhouses are managed by homeowner's associations (HOAs), and the HOAs control what goes on in the communities. While there are neighborhoods of single-family homes that have HOAs, it is more common to find neighborhoods of single-family homes that do not have HOAs controlling them.

When there is a good chance you will need to expand

A second situation when a single-family home is the better option is when a family believes they may need to expand in the future. If you buy a townhouse, there will be no expanding. You will be stuck with the way the home is for as long as you own it. If you buy the right single-family house, on the other hand, you could put an addition on it if you please. You would also have the right to modify the exterior of the home by replacing the siding, adding a deck, or putting a swing set in the yard. You cannot do these things with most townhouses.

When you don't mind taking care of the yard

The other key thing to think about is the yard at the home you purchase. If you do not want to do yardwork, buying a townhouse would be a good choice. If you like yardwork or do not mind doing it, then you should consider buying a single-family home.
